Whitehill

Whitehill

Do you know anything about Whitehill tooling?

In the year of 2000 Whitehill stopped the manufacture of their original Cuterheads? This is . Seventy years after they were invented. In the 1930's machining was quite a major aspect regarding safety and the first circular cutterblocks were produced with a major effect on the industry.
However there were still some dangerous tools being used. "As far as I am aware Whitehill had nothing to do with the production of these"

For those of us old enough to remember when you could mould on a surface planer with a cap hold block and knives 3/8" thick we look back and think I must have been mad.

Whitehill now produce some of the safest blocks and tooling the indusrty has ever seen!

DC Braking

I have looked into D.C.Braking and wondered if any one out their would like to add a few comments that I can publish with the authors name. (only if they wish)

From what I can see this came in to effect on the 5th of December 1998 under the "Provisions of Use of Work Equipment Regulation. This was a huge blow to the timber machining industry and cost and absolute fortune and needless to say I am sure it cost a great deal of small businesses to close down because they were unable to conform to the new legislation because of the finantial burden placed on them.

I am sure that most of us in the Timber trade have understood what DCB has been around for many years, but when it hit us in 1998 questions flew about like leaves in the wind.

I question it my self being a machinist since the early 1980's when we just hit the stop button and walked away knowing that every one in the shop understood the danger of rotating knives. We even had a silent code of practice, and this was touch the table or bed first, if it is still vibrating the block is still rotating, and it worked.

I quote.
"Employers will be required to fit braking on machines to safely reduce the run down time, where the risk assessment shows necessary"

A dead line was also set.

5th December 2003.

Circular saw benches, Dimension saw benches, Powered and hand fed crosscut saws, Single and double end tenoners.

5th December 2005

Narrow band saws, Re-saws, vertical spindle moulders, Hand fed routing machines, Thicknessing / planing machines, Surface planing machines.

Wood working machinery not listed above, which a risk assessment shows braking to be necessary, must comply by 5th December 2008

The regulations apply to all users of woodworking machinery and these include:

Schools, Colleges, Joinery Companies, Timber suppliers, Furniture manufacturer's, Forestry, Double Glazing companies, Door and window manufacturers, DIY warehouses (eg B&Q). Other wood product manufacturing.

After all this fuss it looks like we are now going to ignore it and carry on as if it never happened or doesn't exist. Who do we blame ? I can tear these comments to pieces and send them to the H.S.E but you're opinions would be appreciated and confidential.

Food for thought:

You can not sell a vertical spindle moulder with out DCB!! What if it has a fixed power feed unit to cover the tooling?

All names addresses and telephone numbers will bell deleted for any publication unless requested otherwise but will be kept on record for my reply to you.

Construction Industry Scheme

What has happened to our C.I.S.?

Well as from April 6th 2007 there will be no cards, no tax certificates & no vouchers.
You're cards and cert's show whether you are paid gross and declare you're own tax. So as of the above date contractors will now have to contact H.M.Revenue & Customs direct.

Tax Vouchers are no longer required.

Take care all. Most subbies will be transferred without having to do a thing, but if you have a valid card or cert that runs out before April 6th 2007 then renew it NOW.

If you are being paid GROSS now, you can still be paid this way providing you keep you're books and payments up to date.

If you don't it looks like you will have it revoked

To help you the help line number is 0845 366 7899

Good Luck; Chris

Single to Three part 2

Let me help you with you're 3 phase problems.
I have contacts with a company that produce Phase Changers / converters to the highest standards and utilize unique microprocessor based controllers to provide quality Three Phase utility supply.
While your converter does provide a true 3 phase output, there are a few 'tricks' that you Must understand prior to connection.
Three Phase Converters are designed primarily for the connection of 3 phase machinery and other 3 phase loads. It is extremely important that you understand that two of the three phases are generated by the converter. The third phase is the original supply active which is used to power the converter. This phase goes straight through the converter and IS THE ONLY PHASE THAT HAS A 240v OUTPUT WHEN MEASURED TO NEUTRAL OR EARTH. THE OTHER TWO PHASES DO NOT HAVE A 240v REFERENCE TO EARTH OR NEUTRAL.
The two generated phases are L1 / Red output and L2 / White ouput.

L1 / Red output to earth or neutral will measure approximately 160v
L2 / White approximately 360v
L3 / Blue, output to earth or neutral will measure the original supply voltage 240v
For 99% of applications this is not a problem as phase to phase voltages of 415V +/- 5% between each of the three phases still exists.
What is important is that each machine connected to he converter is checked to the following guidelines. If not then the machines may not operate correctly, and in some circumstances damage the machine and the converter.
NEVER ATTEMPT TO INSTALL A PHASE-CHANGER POWER CONVERTER
WITH OUT A QUALIFIED AND LICENCED ELECTRICIAN

Single to Three

I am going to let you know about phases.
This all seems a bit silly in some cases because we don't all understand how electricity works and I must admit that I am close to one of those, so I join you!
However I have spent a great deal of time repairing Wood Working Machinery & Electrical Components, This includes Single Phase, Three Phase & 110 Voltage as well as 240v In most cases we can all to a certain degree re-wire something be-it a plug or a socket on the wall but when it comes down to the above then we ask our selves what is the difference?
Well it boils down to this. It is not not a lot but we have to undersatnd that it's not the Voltage that kills you! It's The Amperage!

This I will cover in a further addition to this issue.
PLEASE NOTE I AM NOT A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN
BUT WILL SEEK QUALIFIED ADVICE ON YOU'RE BEHALF

My main concern is for those of you that only have single phase box standard supply and need more power. We have all purchased the lowest price tools and lost money in the long run because they don't last.

This applies to Single Phase compared to Three Phase. A single phase motor will always cost more in comparison to three phase. Why? Because, A Three Phase Power supply will cost you an arm and a leg to install.
That is of course if you're supplier will install it or the local council allow it! Don't forget we are now talking industrial.
So as not to confuse you, A single phase motor is more expensive than a Three phase motor to purchase, single phase has less power and will reduce productivity and increase power consumption and electricity bills.

But if we could alleviate the expense of Three phase installation and pay a Qualified electrician to install you're new phase changer and pay less than half the price to install a three phase supply, I know where my Money would go!!!

I have sold Phase Converters / Phase Changers in Australia where they originated and through the U.K. with great results

Problem Solver

WOOD-MACHINE-DRAGON
Q. Why does my bench saw keep lifting the wood and jamming?
Ans;
This is a very common fault with saws and easy to rectify depending on what material you are machining on a rip or panel saw and the type of blade you are using. If you are cutting a piece of timber 25mm x 350mm for instance on a panel saw then the chances are that you’re fence is incorrectly set and you require lead on the fence and you fence positioned so that the closest part of the down cut of the blade to the machinist is level with the bottom of the furthest part of the fence. If you are machining sheet material the fence should be parallel and forward too and past the rear of the blade. If you do not understand what I mean please mail me and I will advise you step by step until we eliminate you’re problem. Please be as specific as you can about the material you are machining and the type of blade (positive hook, negative triple chip 90 degree, angled tooth top or hollow face ) so that I can identify the problem quickly and make you’re working environment is safer.
N.B. YOU CAN NOT CUT TIMBER LONG GRAIN WITH NEGATIVE HOOK BLADES.
THIS IS EXTREMLY DANGEROUS

Wood Machine Tooling

Full range of Whitehill wood machine tooling supply and advice.
What is wood machinery tooling? What a question and what a variation we have. It is a massive and very complex subject that should be addressed with respect. The Wood machinist of old will, if still around be able to tell you stories and teach you tricks that “Wood” scare the modern Wood Machinists to death.

Wood Working Machine Tooling has improved enormously over the years with regards to safety but unfortunately not conforming to the practicalities of the Wood Machining Trade.

I am lucky in a way that I had the benefit of growing up with and being taught by some of the old boys in the days of square blocks, free hand grinding and even balata belts. How many of you out their remember those times or even know what I am blabbering on about?

We had spindle moulders, Also known as Shapers, with ring fences but no cage guard on the top to cover the horrendous square blocks or even the slotted collars. This type of tooling is now illegal however still used by the few that have the knowledge, experience off free hand grinding and cutter forming combined with the guts to do so as well as hide it from the H.S.E.

We no longer have the scope that used to be available when using Wood Machine Tooling and we have more or less lost the satisfaction of seeing a reproduced seventy year old skirting that was produced by freehand knife grinding.

Tungsten and Stellite have taken over the Circular and band saw industry and Case hardened blades in the local butchers with the butcher who has never been trained on this type of machine to the standards required by law for the Wood machinist. These are toys to those of us who have seen, used and witnessed the logging saw and re-saws with blades that would petrify most people especially when you are standing above a six foot diameter wheel with a 6” blade rather than top and bottom wheels in an enclosed cover standing on a bench just cutting a bone not a three foot wide tree trunk like it was warm butter.

I am forty three years old and still say that the old Circular Blades with the Periphery set with a stone, sharpened by hand in a saw horse and set with the B.W.G. tool will always cut better than any modern blade that has to be sent away to be Polished.

That’s right, I did say Polished, because you can not sharpen Tungsten because it is very hard and very brittle. If you look at it and compare the edge to that of an old plate saw that has been sharpened by hand or on maybe the old Volmer under a microscope you will see that Tungsten will look like a jagged edge. If you hit a piece of lime with Tungsten it will tend to shatter the corners where as the old metal plates would negotiate it with little effort and whistle like a sweat song.

Balance and tracking is an extremely important part of the Wood Working Macnery Tooling industry that I will cover in my next issue.
Do you listen to you’re Wood Working Machines?
Do you’re Wood Working Machine Blades Blister?
Do you have serious vibration off your Wood Working Machine?
Does your Wood Working Machine seem to start with a heavy kick?
Why do you’re Band saw blade,s keep breaking?
Is it worth changing my old cap hold or wedge hold block for Tersa?
